Ulingan is a place in Tondo, Manila, named after the industry that the place is known for – charcoal factory, the place where charcoal is made, where wood is burned in such a way that it turns into coals.  This is how people live, including the children that a inhale the smoke of burning wood every day.  Poverty is a very disturbing reality, especially when you know that people didn’t have to be there… if only there were not too many corrupt people in power, who amass the money that needs to be used for the people, and sit on that money without apologies.  The sin of greed is the cause of poverty, the reason why some people had to settle for charcoal industry and risk their families to having serious respiratory problems.  It is disturbing to see the plight of the people in the charcoal factory, and I say a prayer every day now, that those whose hearts have been hardened by greed will be melted away by compassion.

This is my entry to Where’s my backpack? travel theme challenge: Wood.

  1. Inequality exists wherever greed is and greed has no conscience.
